Ivan Meštrovic was one of the most prominent Croatian artists of the first half of the twentieth century, working as a sculptor, painter, architect and writer. He originally designed the Galerija Meštrovic as a summer residence, working studio and exhibition space combined. It is surrounded by a Mediterranean garden ornamented with bronze sculptures that complement the view of the sea and surrounding Dalmatian islands.

Today, the Galerija houses Meštrovic's masterpieces, statues in marble, bronze, plaster and wood. It is part of a series of sites donated by the artist to the people of Croatia; the Muzeji Ivana Meštrovica also manage his former home and studio in Zagreb, the renovated Renaissance castello in Split, as well as the family mausoleum in Otavice, where Meštrovic grew up.
